Bi-Polar
Bi-Polar (2002) was shot as a very simple visual idea, using both nightvision and full colour modes on a Sony PC 100
NTSC. The two modes merge and combine to form kaleidoscopic images of a silent scream and a murmuring voice. The
blink-and-you'll-miss-it quote is from Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra - 'The Way Of The Creator' and
should provide a clue as to the conversation between the voices. One is clearly the doubting heart full of the fears
of the herd, but does it scream in agony or whisper in betrayal? Which is which?
This was my first real experimentation with digital effects, mainly various overlay techniques. The original plan was that
the two mouths would both scream or sing or something, but no known noise really seemed to fit!
Below you can see a stream of Bi-Polar. Obviously it has been compressed somewhat in order to fit online. As
this means that some of the detail is slightly lost, I've also added some higher res stills.
